When we moved up to the mountains, we didn’t expect our very first rescue on the new property to be a herd of cows — but that’s exactly what happened.
The land was still under lease with a cattleman, and eight pregnant mama cows were part of the agreement. We were heartbroken to find out that all of them were scheduled to be sent to slaughter — even with their babies still inside them. Unfortunately, this is a common practice in the cattle industry, but we knew we couldn’t let that happen.
Our dad stepped in immediately and offered to buy all eight pregnant cows. And here’s something we learned fast: cows are sold by weight... and pregnant cows? They're heavy!
Several months later, we were blessed with eight healthy calves, each one bonding deeply with their mamas. So deeply, in fact, that they continued to nurse for over two years. Watching them grow up together, side by side, was one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever seen.
Today, these sixteen cows live in peace and safety on the property — no tags, no brands, and no expiration date. Just wide open pastures, sunshine, and freedom.
Fun fact: Cows can live up to 18–22 years when protected — and we plan on giving every single one of them all those years and more.
