Jack

Adopted

Jack arrived at A & K Animal Rescue in rough shape. He had been used for rodeo roping practice, even though rodeos typically use calves. Why they chose a mini mule is still a mystery—maybe because he was already full-grown, unlike fast-growing baby cows. But the reasoning didn’t matter. What mattered was that Jack had been through hell.

When he came to us, he was terrified of humans, especially men. His body told the story of his past—several broken bones, deep fear, and no trust left to give. He was our first rescue mule, and we knew he needed space. He needed time. He needed to learn that not all people would hurt him.

I still remember trying to feed him a carrot that first day. The transporter warned me, “He’s probably never eaten one before.” Sure enough, he wouldn’t take it. The poor guy didn’t know what kindness was. He didn’t know what it meant to be safe.

Years later, Jack has come so far. He’s learned that not all humans are bad, and he’s even built some friendships—including with Charlotte, our rescue pig. In fact, his favorite food is her pig pellets. He now enjoys a wide variety of treats like oats, apples, and pig food (much to Charlotte’s annoyance).

Jack may never be a cuddly, people-loving mule, and that’s okay. He has his space, his freedom, and his peace. That’s more than he ever had before.
