James

Adopted

James was named after my favorite book in the Bible, a name that symbolizes perseverance, faith, and strength. And after what he survived, he needed all three.

We first heard about James when a rescue facility called us before they even attempted to save him. They told us about a horrific situation—James was trapped in a tiny dog crate, standing in his own feces, barely surviving. The worst part? His owner refused to give him up.

According to what we were told, the owner planned to eat him.

The kind-hearted rescuers who found James knew they had to act fast. They offered the owner money in exchange for his life. Thankfully, the man agreed, and James was rushed straight to A & K Animal Rescue.

But James didn’t trust anyone. Why would he? He arrived traumatized, extremely malnourished, and terrified of humans. Like our other mule, Jack, he had never known kindness. Survival was all he had ever known.

Today, James is thriving. He’s gained weight, has the freedom to roam, and is learning that not all people are cruel. The scars of his past are still there—even after years with us, he is still hesitant. If my husband turns his back toward James, he will slowly approach him, allowing him to be pet. But only on his terms.

His trust may never fully return, but he is safe now. He is free. He is loved.
